An overview of our Senior Phase courses
National 5
The National 5 Art & Design course is comprised of 3 components all of which learners must complete to achieve the National 5 award.
Component 1 - Question Paper
The paper is sat in the main body of SQA exams over a duration of 80 minutes. The paper is worth 40 marks which is scaled to a mark out of 50 meaning it makes up 20% of the overall course award.
Component 2 - Expressive Portfolio
The folio is completed throughout the school year within lessons and deadlines are set for learners to work towards throughout to support the completion of the work. This folio is worth 100 marks so makes up 40% of the overall course award.
Component 3 - Design Portfolio
The folio is completed throughout the school year within lessons and deadlines are set for learners to work towards throughout to support the completion of the work. This folio is worth 100 marks so makes up 40% of the overall course award.


Higher
The Higher Art & Design course is comprised of 3 components all of which learners must complete to achieve the Higher award.
Component 1 - Question Paper
The paper is sat in the main body of SQA exams over a duration of 2 hours. The paper is worth 60 marks.
Component 2 - Expressive Portfolio
The folio is completed throughout the school year within lessons and deadlines are set for learners to work towards throughout to support the completion of the work. This folio is worth 100 marks.
Component 3 - Design Portfolio
The folio is completed throughout the school year within lessons and deadlines are set for learners to work towards throughout to support the completion of the work. This folio is worth 100 marks.


Advanced Higher
The Advanced Higher Art & Design course is comprised of one single component which learners must complete to achieve the full course award.
Within this component learners can select whether they focus on Design or Expressive.
Component 1 - Portfolio
Within this single Component the portfolio has three sections
Section 1 - Practical Design work is worth 64 marks
Section 2 - Contextual Analysis if worth 30 marks
Section 3 - Evaluation is work 6 marks
This means the total marks for the portfolio is 100 marks.



National 5
The National 5 Music course is comprised of 3 components all of which learners must complete to achieve the National 5 award.
Component 1 - Question Paper
The paper is sat in the main body of SQA exams over a duration of 45 minutes. The listening paper is worth 40 marks which is scaled to a mark out of 35 meaning it makes up 35% of the overall course award.
Component 2 - Assignment
The composition assignment is completed throughout the school year within lessons and deadlines are set for learners to work towards throughout to support the completion of the work. The assignment is worth 30 marks which is scaled to a mark out of 15 meaning it makes up 15% of the overall course award.
Component 3 - Performance Instrument 1 and 2.
The performance assessment is completed in school time by a visiting SQA verifier. Dates of these assessments vary across schools, but all happen prior to the start of exam leave. Learners are supported to device their performance programme throughout the school year ready for this formal assessment. Each performance instrument receives a mark out of 30 which is scaled to a mark out of 25 meaning the performance element makes up 50% of the overall course award.

The National 5 PE course is comprised of 2 components both of which learners must complete to achieve the National 5 award.
Component 1 - Portfolio
The portfolio is a body of work which learners complete throughout the academic session. Learners can complete the questions ahead of a final write up and receive generic feedback on them. Completion of the questions is done in a controlled environment within the classroom setting. The completed folio is submitted to SQA for marking. The portfolio is worth 60 marks which makes up 50% of the overall course award.
Component 2 - Performance
The performance assessment is completed in school time by PE staff and all assessments must be sat within a competitive one-off setting. Dates of these assessments are set throughout the school year, but all happen prior to the start of exam leave. Learners are supported to select their strongest performance activities. Each performance receives a mark out of 30 given an overall practical mark out of 60, meaning the performance element makes up 50% of the overall course award.
Higher
The Higher PE course is comprised of 2 components both of which learners must complete to achieve the Higher award.
Component 1 - Question Paper
The paper is sat in the main body of SQA exams over a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The paper is worth 50 marks which makes up 50% of the overall course award.
The paper is split into 3 sections:
Section 1 - This measures general knowledge and understanding
Section 2 - This is all focused around a Personal Development Programme
Section 3 - This is a Scenario question
Component 2 - Performance
The performance assessment is completed in school time by PE staff and all assessments must be sat within a competitive one-off setting. Dates of these assessments are set throughout the school year, but all happen prior to the start of exam leave. Learners are supported to select their strongest performance activities. Each performance receives a mark out of 30 given an overall practical mark out of 60. For Higher this mark is then scaled to a total mark of 50 meaning the performance element makes up 50% of the overall course award.
Sports Development
The Sports Development Course comprises two different SQA courses which will result in learners achieving a Level 5 and Level 6 qualification. The courses are taught interlinked, and all elements are worked on throughout the course of the year. The courses learners complete are made up of individual units all assessed on a pass or fail basis. Below you will see the course outline and the units that students will work through.

Learners must pass all 4 units to achieve the overall course award. Within these units learners will be required to deliver activity sessions to peers and within the BGE classes of the school and the local primary schools.
Play in Sport - Level 6
The three units that learners will work through are
Working with Children and Young People to Provide Play in a Sports Environment
Health, Safety and Wellbeing
Provide Play Sessions
Learners must pass all 3 units to achieve the overall course award. Within these units learners will be required to deliver activity sessions to peers and within the BGE classes of the school and the local primary schools.
Football Referee & Coaching
The Football Referee & Coaching Course comprises two different SQA courses which will result in learners achieving a Level 6 and Level 7 qualification. The courses are taught as stand alone courses, with the Football referee course being delivered in the early stages of the year and the Coaching Course in the later stages.
The courses learners complete are made up of individual units all assessed on a pass or fail basis. Below you will see the course outline and the units that students will work through.
Sport Coaching - Level 6

Learners must pass all both units to achieve the overall course award.
SFA Refereeing - Level 7
The two units that learners will work through are
Laws of the Game
Practical Refereeing
Learners must pass both units to achieve the overall course award. Within these units learners will be required to referee games within BGE classes within the local primary schools.
