Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

At Linlithgow Academy, our goal is to help every student flourish and thrive in school and beyond.

Vision and Values 2023

We believe that:

  • Learning connects us
  • Learning empowers us
  • Learning inspires us
  • Learning sustains us

These principles guide how we teach, plan and support learners across our school.

The Importance of Relationships

Strong, supportive relationships are at the heart of effective learning. Learners do best when they feel safe, respected and connected to their teachers, peers and the school community. Positive Relationships at Linlithgow Academy

What is CORE Practice?

CORE is the name we give to our shared approach to teaching and learning. It reflects our belief that:

  • Learning is social: we learn best with and from others.

  • Learning is meaningful: it should connect learners to powerful ideas and real-world perspectives.

  • Learning is personal: learners grow not just in knowledge but in empathy, curiosity and character.

Why "CORE"?

"Core" means the heart or most important part and that is what this approach is about. CORE practice focuses on the essential relationship between:

  • Learners

  • Teachers

  • What we learn

This connection helps learners build confidence, understanding and a love of learning.

The CORE Elements

Our pedagogical approach is built on 12 key teaching elements, grouped under C-O-R-E. These help teachers design lessons that:

  • Are engaging and challenging

  • Encourage discussion and thinking

  • Build strong foundations of knowledge

They are not a fixed checklist but a flexible guide to great classroom practice.

Learners at the Centre

Everything we do is designed to put learners at the heart of learning. That means:

  • Creating lessons that spark curiosity

  • Encouraging students to think, talk and collaborate

  • Supporting personal growth and independence

A Research Informed Approach

Our CORE framework is based on research about what makes teaching effective. It focuses on the instructional core, the relationship between content, teaching and learner engagement which is key to long-term learning success.

In Summary

At Linlithgow Academy, we believe every learner can thrive through rich, meaningful learning. CORE practice will help us make that vision a reality every day in every classroom.
