Supporting Neurodivergent Learners at Linlithgow Academy
At Linlithgow Academy, we are committed to creating an inclusive, nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
We recognise that neurodivergent learners, those who may experience differences in thinking, learning and behaviour bring unique strengths and face distinct challenges. Our approach is grounded in understanding, empathy and evidence-based strategies that support each child's individual journey.
What Does Neurodivergent Mean?
Neurodivergence refers to a range of conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and other developmental differences. These children may experience challenges with attention, memory, planning, emotional regulation, sensory processing and social interaction. However, they also often demonstrate remarkable creativity, resilience, empathy and problem-solving abilities.
Our Approach
- Understand Strengths and Difficulties: We work closely with families to identify each child's unique profile, celebrating their strengths while recognising areas where they may need support.
- Executive Function Support: We help children develop skills in organisation, working memory, attention and planning through tailored classroom strategies and routines.
- Sensory and Emotional Regulation: Our staff are trained to recognise sensory needs and emotional cues, offering tools such as movement breaks, quiet spaces and sensory aids.
- Flexible Learning Strategies: We encourage the use of visual aids, checklists, mind maps and other tools to support learning and independence.
- Positive Behaviour Support: We look beyond behaviour to understand the thinking and emotional processes behind it, helping children develop self-awareness and self-regulation.
Working Together
We believe that collaboration between school, home and external professionals is key. Whether your child has a formal diagnosis or is awaiting assessment, we are here to support them. Our goal is to foster a positive learning environment where neurodivergent children feel understood, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.
