Canal Works in Linlithgow
What's going on?

From Scottish Canals:
As you are likely to be aware, we are currently undertaking some winter engineering works along the Union Canal, between Bridge 45 (next to Linlithgow Academy at Preston Road) and Bridge 48 (at Woodcockdale).
This work follows the embankment surveys that were carried out in 2017, and involves two phases of vital embankment works. The first phase began on 5th November and involves installing 160 metres of sheet piling. This phase will last for 14 weeks, and the towpath has been closed to allow plant and machinery to access the canal bank safely. A signed towpath diversion is in place for pedestrians and cyclists during this period, which also includes the two weeks over Christmas and New Year. The canal is also closed to navigation, with dam structures in place at both Bridge 45 and Bridge 48 to enable a partial dewatering of the canal. In addition to strengthening the canal embankment, these works will also create four residential and four leisure/visitor moorings for which full planning permission has been granted.
The second phase two of embankment improvements will begin in January 2019 and will involve further sheet piling at Manse Road East.
These embankment works were identified as a priority under our Asset Management Strategy, following the results of the 2017 survey. The strategy identifies where Scottish Canals' limited resources will be directed, prioritising works that ensure the safety of the public and bring the widest possible benefits for all the people of Scotland. Here in Linlithgow, we recognise both the potential impact any failures would have on the town and the need to safeguard the rich history and heritage of Linlithgow.
We apologise for any convenience that these works may cause. Our engineering team are currently identifying dates in the works programme for us to hold an open day, to let everyone see the work we're carrying out and why it's so important. We'll be in touch again with an open day invitation! In the meantime, you can find out more about the works on our website, and follow us on Twitter @ScottishCanals for updates
