Courses
S1
In first year, students will learn the building blocks of Art & Design, through a variety of 2D and 3D projects which develop an understanding of the visual elements: line, shape, tone, form, colour, texture and pattern.
S2
In second year, we split the year up into Design and Expressive projects.
For Design, students take part in the Edinburgh Fringe poster competition; and undertake a Fashion and Performance Costume project.
For Expressive, students undertake a still-life and figurative sculpture.
S3
In third year, we offer a sketchbook approach to the year, and focus on developing skills using a variety of media, looking at the work of relevant artists and designers. We also offer students the opportunity to enter the Schuh Design Challenge and the RSA Schools Competition.
S3 Animation Elective
Using our animation suite, which houses 6 computers and cameras for stop-motion animation, we give students an introduction to Animation basics from bouncing ball, to cut paper and claymation.
National 4
The National 4 course covers both Expressive and Design work It is primarily a practical course where students learn to process new skills to develop ideas into both an expressive and design solution. The students are expected to study the work of other artists and designers for inspiration this involves some written work.
Course involves Drawing, painting, model making, graphic design 2d &3d outcomes
National 5
The National 5 course offers students the opportunity to expand on their Expressive skills developing compositional ideas towards a final piece of Art, learning a variation of specialist techniques along the way.
The Design course asks the students to provide themselves with a design brief, from this they will embark on an Investigation which leads them through a process of developing design solutions through problem solving and experimentation. Throughout the process they learn the importance of presentation and understanding client's needs. Students will also study the work of Artists and Designers to inform their coursework, and to learn the importance of critical study.
Higher
The Higher course allows students to push their skill set further and to experiment more with both Expressive and Design ideas. Having learned a range of specialist drawing, painting and printing techniques at National 5, Higher provides the opportunity to explore more individual ideas and compositions all the while developing more sophistication with media. Creativity and self-expression are at the core of the Expressive folio.
With the Design folio, students further build on the problem solving skills learned in National 5, however the concept level for design becomes more sophisticated, presentation of ideas becomes slicker, processes and skills honed to create Design solutions close to professional standard.
Critical Studies are key as students must be aware of the importance of the development of Art & Design throughout history and its social and cultural impact. Students will also find influence in the work of contemporary artists and designers.

Advanced Higher
The pinnacle of a student's experience of Art & Design at school is Advanced Higher. It can be pursued purely for the enjoyment of the subject, however many of the students choose to study the course as it offers the opportunity to build a folio of work for application to Higher education courses in the creative industries. For students wishing to pursue a career in Art & Design the course is essential. Higher provides the entry grades but Advanced Higher provides the folio.
