Developing students' performance skills both in the classroom and through instrumental lessons provided by specialised instructors

Through our BGE and Senior Phase Curriculums, pupils develop their performing, listening and composing skills through a variety of activities from learning to play instruments and performing (solo or ensemble) to composing their own music using a wide range of technology.

There are many ensembles that run in the department throughout the week that offer pupils opportunities to develop their performing skills and take part in our Christmas, Spring and CMD Concerts. These are:

Advice to candidates:

BGE

Throughout the BGE courses (S1-3) you will be given the opportunity to learn different instruments and develop your practical skills.

You will also develop your Understanding and Listening skills, learning about different genres of Music, learning about the social and cultural influences of Music from different countries, instruments and styles.

Composing skills are developed in a variety of topics and using different technology such as Noteflight, Soundation, Audacity, GarageBand and Cubase.

National 4 & 5 Music

The National 4 and 5 Music courses offer pupils a variety of opportunities to develop their Performing, Understanding and Composing skills. Throughout the course, you will prepare a performance repertoire for 2 instruments which must last for 8 minutes. You will learn about different genres of Music as well as developing your understanding of Music Theory.

You will also have the opportunity to compose a piece of Music which must last between 1- 2 ½ minutes long.

Higher Music

The Higher Course offers pupils offers a variety of opportunities for pupils to continue developing their Performing, Understanding and Composing skills.

Throughout the course, you will prepare a programme of Music for 2 instruments that lasts for 12 minutes. You will continue to learn about different genres of Music as well as developing your Music Theory.

You will also gain composing experience, writing a piece of music that lasts between 2 and 3 ½ minutes long.

Advanced Higher Music

The Advanced Higher Course offers pupils a variety of opportunities for pupils to continue developing their Performing, Understanding and Composing skills.

Throughout the course, you will prepare a programme of Music for 2 instruments that lasts for 18 minutes. You will continue to learn about different genres of Music as well as developing your Music Theory.

You will also gain more composing experience as well as conducting an analysis of two contrasting pieces.

National 4 & 5 Music Technology

The purpose of the National 5 Music Technology course is to enable candidates to develop their knowledge and understanding of music technology and music concepts, particularly those relevant to 20th and 21st century music. Candidates develop technical and creative skills through practical learning. The course provides opportunities for candidates to develop their interest in music technology and to develop skills and knowledge relevant to the needs of the music industry.

Higher Music Technology

The purpose of the Higher Music Technology Course is to enable learners to develop and extend their knowledge and understanding of music technology and of music concepts, particularly those relevant to 20th and 21st century music. Learners will engage in the development of in-depth technical and creative skills through practical learning. This Course will provide opportunities for learners to develop their interest in music technology and to develop skills and knowledge relevant to the needs of the music industry.
