Welcome to the Science Faculty

Vision and Values 2023

We believe the Science Faculty at Linlithgow Academy is a dynamic and innovative team dedicated to sparking curiosity and inspiring discovery. With expertise across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, we deliver a rich and inclusive curriculum that connects classroom learning to the real world.

Through our Big Ideas in Science framework and hands-on STEM experiences, learners develop creativity, critical thinking and confidence as they explore how science shapes their lives and futures. Together, we are committed to inspiring curiosity, creativity and confidence through a rich and inclusive science curriculum that helps our learners understand and shape the world around them.

Dynamic and Innovative Curriculum

We deliver engaging and challenging learning experiences designed to build scientific understanding, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our curriculum includes a diverse range of subjects and qualifications, from Broad General Education (BGE) Science through to Advanced Higher in each discipline.

A major highlight is our innovative STEM course, now fully embedded in S1-S3, which focuses on:

  • Real-world scientific investigation and engineering design
  • Collaboration and creativity
  • Learning for sustainability
  • Developing skills for life, learning and work

Our "Big Ideas in Science" framework helps students make meaningful connections between topics — encouraging them to think deeply, question purposefully and see how science shapes everyday life.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

We believe science learning should extend beyond the lab.

Our learners take part in a variety of experiences that bring science to life — from fieldwork and environmental studies to national competitions, STEM clubs and visits from universities and industry experts.

These opportunities help students see how science links to future careers and global challenges.

Strong Partnerships

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. We work closely with partners such as:

  • STEM Ambassadors
  • Education Scotland
  • Edinburgh College
  • Local industry and research organisations

These partnerships enrich our curriculum and support our Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) goals, giving learners insight into how science connects with innovation, technology and the wider community.

Celebrating Achievement and Voice

We are proud of our learners' enthusiasm and achievements — from success in STEM challenges and science fairs to leadership roles as STEM Ambassadors and Science Club mentors.

Pupil voice is central to our improvement work. We regularly involve our young people in shaping their learning experiences through Science Parliament groups, focus sessions and peer feedback on new course developments.

Commitment to Excellence

Our faculty is committed to continuous reflection and improvement.

Through the school's CORE learning framework, collaborative professional learning and regular self-evaluation, we ensure our teaching remains engaging, inclusive and forward-looking.

Our goal is simple: to nurture scientifically literate, confident and compassionate learners who are ready to lead and contribute in a rapidly changing world.
