William Thompson

First Baron Kelvin

Kelvin House is named after the excellent British physicist and engineer Lord Kelvin who attended and worked at Glasgow University from the age of 10. Despite several offers from several world renowned universities, Kelvin opted to remain the Professor of Natural Philosophy in Glasgow for over 50 years, until his eventual retirement from that post.

Kelvin is renowned for his scientific findings and inventions such as the Kelvin temperature scale (where 0 Kelvin is the minimum possible temperature - 'absolute zero') along with his coinage of the phrase 'kinetic energy'. We in Kelvin House admire the dedication and commitment he showed to his work and we aspire to show the same to Linlithgow Academy and our community.

Our House colour is green. Green symbolises creativity, growth prosperity and - most importantly - positivity. This represents the attitude of members of Kelvin House - always aiming for success in all that we do. Green is also a symbol of environmental protection and social justice, reminding us all of our duty to be responsible citizens. Kelvin once said, "to live among friends is the primary essential of happiness," an ideology that we believe in as we endeavour to ensure that every pupil in Kelvin feels a valued member of the House. As a result, we wear our green banded ties with pride!
