So just to provide a bit of background about myself. I am a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Cytopathology although I currently work in the field of Blood Transfusion. Biomedical Scientists work in hospital and NHS laboratories carrying out all the relevant testing e.g. blood tests, urine tests and that used in the treatment and diagnosis of patients. They also manufacture specialist blood products and components and novel therapies that are used in life saving blood transfusions and treatments for patients.
I studied for an accredited honours degree in Biomedical Science and began my career as a Medical Laboratory Assistant while I was still at university. I secured a trainee Biomedical Scientist post in cytology and underwent on the job training completing the Institute of Biomedical Science Registration Portfolio which is required to become a Health and Care Professions Council registered Biomedical Scientist practitioner. After this I progressed on to complete a Specialist Portfolio in Cytopathology, again undertaking on the job training that covered all the areas of my specialism. The training and experience I gained allowed me to move disciplines first moving to Tissues, Cells and Advanced Therapeutics within the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS). This department provides Scotland's national stock of donated bone, hearth valves, tendons and novel therapeutic treatments such as the HPC stem cell programme and Pancreatic Islet Cell Transplantation. I then moved to the Manufacturing Department within SNBTS with involves manufacturing and processing blood donations to supply the whole of Scotland with blood and blood components.

Although this mostly focuses on Biomedical Scientists, I have included information that covers all career paths in the field of Biomedical Science from entry level posts all the way to Consultant level within the NHS which shows how an individual can progress if they choose to do so and how varied the roles can be.
